JUST MY LUCK (OR EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED)

"The only good luck many great men ever had was being born with the ability and determination to overcome bad luck." - Channing Pollock

There's an old song that says, "If I didn't have bad luck, I'd have no luck at all." Just when I thought things couldn't get any worse, it did. I'm already recovering from cartilage problems in my knee that is causing my knee to go out every so often. So I've been limping around for the past few weeks because of that. I'm also facing possible surgery on my knee if I can work up the nerve to go to the doc.

If I do have surgery I'm facing months of rehab, crutches and pain. On top of that I've had another doc tell me I shouldn't be biking at all because of another medical problem. No, it's not hemorroids, LOL.

Facing all that I figured things can only get better, right? Wrong! Karen and I went swimming yesterday at the pool. I normally swim in the morning or at night, but yesterday we decided to swim midafternoon. Big mistake. I guess I wasn't used to the shadows at that time of day because I was swimming along as normal thinking I still had a couple of strokes left before I got to the wall when my right hand suddenly exploded in searing, blinding, white hot pain.

Somehow that wall came out of nowhere. I ducked under the water to let out a few screams of agony and work up enough nerve to look at what would surely be a finger or two bent at sickenly gross angles. But when I looked, my hand and all my fingers looked normal. I was almost disappointed.

The pain was still intense though. I told Karen that I thought I had broken a finger or two. But since it wasn't swelling up I didn't worry about it too much.

As the day went on though one of my fingers kept hurting more and more and by evening it was swelling. During the night it kept waking me up every time I tried to move it. By this morning it was swollen and would crack or pop (make some sort of noise) and sting every time I bent it. That didn't stop me from going down to the pier this morning and swimming though. Fortunately, swimming didn't make it hurt -- no walls in the ocean.

As of this afternoon I can barely move my finger and it has a lot of pain to remind me not to try.

So I'm typing this on my iPod touch so it's all chicken pecking. With my luck I don't want to get near anything electrical like my computer. Lesson learned: Things can always get worse ... Have a great day and watch out for those unexpected walls.

“You have to take risks. We will only understand the miracle of life fully when we allow the unexpected to happen.” — Paulo Coelho

I hope you can recover from your injuries as naturally as possible (i.e., through exercise, rest and rehab as opposed to surgery). Still it might be a good idea to get some proper advice on it. However, don't be put off by negative comments. 15 years ago when I injured my knee I was told that my exercising days were basically over. I never had surgery for that.

Lions and Tigers and Bears OOOOHHHH MMMYYY!!!!.I am so sorry for all you are going thru. I have heard about days like this and you have just described one of the worst. Please try not to be to afraid of seeing a doctor about your the things you can not fix with therapy or exercise, They really do know what they are doing and you'll be up and running in no time. I have had a few sugeries myself and I was terrified. I prayed alot and it helped alot. The road to recovery may be way faster than you think. Be careful out there, You know I am thinking about you all the time.

Go to the Doc Randy! Just do it now, you have a bunch of friends here to help you when you need us (if you end up on crutches recovering!)

Hope you feel better soon!
